BioMin® F and BioMin® C additives are from the same family of bioactive glass materials, designed to put back the lost apatite mineral that is dissolved from tooth surfaces on a daily basis, but what are the differences between BioMin® F and BioMin® C...
BioMin® F contains Fluoride in the glass besides Calcium and Phosphate. As the glass starts to dissolve in saliva these three ions combine to precipitate Fluorapatite on the tooth surface. Fluorapatite is more resistant to acid attack than hydroxyapatite by a factor of 10.
BioMin® F foaming Fluoride toothpaste incorporates fine BioMin® F particles to supply a low levels of Fluoride for up to 12 hours after brushing. The Fluoride content of the toothpaste is below 600ppm and is slowly released in a controlled manner as saliva dissolves the fine glass particles. The Fluoride will combine with Calcium Phosphate also released from the glass to produce acid resistant Fluorapatite.
Within the BioMin® C glass material, a Chloride ion replaces the Fluoride ion incorporated in BioMin® F glass. BioMin® C is a more reactive glass and develops apatite formation more rapidly, however it does not provide the enhanced acid resistance of BioMin® F since Hydroxyapatite is precipitated onto the tooth surfaces rather than Fluorapatite.
The development of this additive has lead to the creation of the FLUORIDE FREE toothpaste, BioMin® C
Traditional Fluoride toothpastes normally contain 1450ppm of soluble Fluoride (typically Sodium Fluoride or Sodium Monofluorophosphate) and have been shown to reduce the risk of caries.
The concentration of soluble Fluoride reduces rapidly through salivary dilution. Typically the concentration halves after every minute so that after around 90 minutes it is unlikely for any therapeutic level of Fluoride to be present.
In contrast, BioMin® F is able to supply a low level of Fluoride for up to 12 hours after brushing. The slow and controlled supply of Fluoride is far more efficient in it's use of Fluoride. For this reason the level of Fluoride content in BioMin™ F does not need to exceed 600ppm.

Is BioMin™ F toothpaste only for people with sensitive teeth?
BioMin™ F toothpaste is a multi-functional product, we believe the qualities of the toothpaste provide benefits for the whole family. Not just those suffering with sensitive teeth.
What makes BioMin™ F toothpaste different to other toothpastes on the market?
The award-winning technology behind BioMin™ toothpastes has been developed to help reduce tooth sensitivity, help replace lost mineral from tooth surfaces and protect from tooth decay. The patented technology utilises Fluoride-containing bioactive glasses and chloride-containing bioactive glasses. The Fluoride within BioMin™ F is incorporated within the structure of the glass, so therefore the Fluoride is delivered gradually as the glass dissolves for up to 12 hours, meaning the Fluoride is being used more efficiently and requires lower overall concentration, yet still providing Fluoride more effectively.
What are Bioactive glasses?
Bioactive glasses were initially developed for bone grafting, and have been developed for use in BioMin™ F toothpaste to deliver a combination of Calcium, Phosphate and Fluoride ions to promote effective remineralisation of tooth enamel through the production of Fluorapatite. These glasses are highly biocompatible.
Does BioMin™ F toothpaste regenerate tooth mineral permanently?
From day to day your mouth is fighting daily against acid attack. Almost everything you eat and drink either is quite acidic or could contain sugars, that can react with bacteria to form acids. These acids subsequently will attack the tooth enamel and dissolve Calcium and Phosphate from the surface. If the tooth enamel is lost, it cannot re-grow, once it has gone it's gone. BioMin™ F toothpaste is used to help reduce the effect of acid attack and can protect and provide tooth mineral for up to 12 hours. For continuous protection against acid attack we recommend using BioMin™ F toothpaste twice daily and improve your diet by reducing sugar intake.
What is the RDA of BioMin™ F toothpaste?
BioMin™ F is classed as a low abrasive toothpaste, with an RDA value of 68.
Is BioMin™ F safe for children to use?
Whilst there is not yet clinical research on the use of BioMin™ F for children, we see no reason why it should not be used. The lower level of Fluoride is well within the recommendations for children and does not represent a foreseeable risk.
Is BioMin™ F safe to use while pregnant?

Does BioMin™ F toothpaste provide the right amount of Fluoride for hypoplasia?
BioMin™ F toothpaste delivers low level Fluoride for up to 8 times longer than traditional Fluoride toothpastes on the market, thus providing continuous protection. The level of Fluoride delivery from BioMin™ F toothpaste combined with Calcium and Phosphate is optimal for the development of new tooth mineral. We believe that not only Fluoride but also Calcium and Phosphate are required for effective development of new tooth mineral (apatite). Whilst there is not yet clinical research in this area, it is potentially feasible that BioMin™ F may be an effective aid for such cases.
How much Fluoride does BioMin™ F toothpaste contain?
BioMin™ F contains approximately 60% less Fluoride than most supermarket and pharmacy toothpaste, containing less than 600 ppm Fluoride per tube, compared to most supermarket and pharmacy toothpaste which contain around 1400-1500 ppm. The lower Fluoride level may reduce the risk of fluorosis.
What is dental Fluorosis?
Dental Fluorosis is a change in the appearance of the tooth’s enamel surface. Common cases of Fluorosis do not cause pain or affect the function of the tooth. Mild forms of Fluorosis appear as white markings on the tooth’s enamel which are difficult to see with the untrained eye. However with severe Fluorosis the enamel may have pitting and brown spots.
What causes Dental Fluorosis?
Dental fluorosis is caused by consuming too much Fluoride. With this knowledge scientists and researchers as BioMin Technologies Limited created BioMin™ F toothpaste to deliver lower levels of Fluoride with less than 600ppm per 75ml tube.
Does BioMin™ F toothpaste have a whitening agent?
Most of the “whitening” and “brightening claims” made by retail toothpastes are based on the toothpaste having mild abrasives that can reduce surface staining. BioMin™ F is classed as a low abrasive toothpaste so therefore could deliver some whitening benefits. To receive significant whitening benefits consumers are advised to visit their dentists.
Are BioMin™ and Novamin® the same?
No.
Though BioMin™ and Novamin® belong to the bioglass family, their components are different. The BioMin™ (active compound) is a newer compound called Calcium FluoroPhospho Silicate. Novamin® is a Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate. The newer BioMin™ F compound has three advantages: It contains Fluoride within the glass structure, enabling slow and extended release of up to 12 hours; has a higher Phosphate content for enhanced bioactivity; smaller particles which can enter and fill the tooth’s open tubules.
When should I brush my teeth?
It’s best to brush twice a day, first thing in the morning (before breakfast) and last thing at night. Never brush immediately after consuming food or drink because your tooth enamel will be slightly weakened and more susceptible to abrasion.
How firm should my toothbrush be?
We recommend using a soft-medium toothbrush when using BioMin™ toothpaste products.
Are any animal by-products used in the manufacture of BioMin™ toothpaste products?
No animal derived products are contained in BioMin™ and no animal testing has been used in its development.
What's the formulation of BioMin™ C and how are the ingredients used?
BioMin C (bioactive glass): Active ingredient which adheres to the tooth upon brushing and slowly dissolves saliva to release calcium and phosphate which precipitate on the tooth surfaces as hydroxycarbonated apatite (same as the natural tooth)
